Reviews

In participants' own words

RH

Rohani bt Hamid

Senior executive, Johor Bahru

"I came to the Courtyard Walk unsure what I even needed to ask. By the third session I had a clearer picture of my cash flow than I'd had in years. It wasn't that the information was new — I'd just never sat down and looked at it together in one place. The writing exercise helped."

TK

Thamilselvan Krishnan

Engineer, Johor Bahru

"The Investing Foundations course is the first time I have understood fund cost disclosures properly. I'd been buying unit trusts for eight years without really reading the charges. The session on reading prospectuses honestly was worth the whole fee by itself."

LW

Lim Wei Keat

Business owner, Johor Bahru

"Solid programme. As a self-employed person, the EPF sections were partly not applicable to me, but the facilitator addressed that directly and pointed me to the voluntary contributions framework instead, which I hadn't known about. I would have liked one more session on foreign currency holdings, but overall very useful."

Norizah bt Razali

Teacher, Skudai

"I'm fifty-two and I'd been putting off this kind of thinking for years. The Whole-Picture programme finally made me face things I'd been avoiding — insurance gaps I hadn't acted on, a healthcare cost estimate I'd never made. The private sessions were what worked for me. Being able to talk through my specific situation without a group listening made a real difference."

Azman bin Mansor

Civil servant, Johor Bahru

"My wife and I attended the Courtyard Walk together. It is one of the better decisions we've made. We had separate ideas about our money that we'd never really sat down and compared. The sessions gave us a structure to do that. The facilitator was patient and didn't make us feel naive for not having thought about it before."

Soo Chin Mei

Healthcare administrator, JB

"I went in expecting something like a seminar. It wasn't. Much quieter, much more focused. The thing I valued most was that nobody tried to sell me anything afterwards. I've attended financial talks before where the product pitch started halfway through. That doesn't happen here."

Case Studies

Three journeys through our programmes

Each case study describes the situation a participant brought to us, what the programme addressed, and where they stood at the close.

Facing an unclear financial picture at 47

Courtyard Walk · 3 weeks

The situation

A 47-year-old government servant who had never made a complete list of what she owned and owed. She held two EPF accounts, a Tabung Haji account, a housing loan, and several insurance policies — but had no single view of how these connected.

What the programme did

The Courtyard Walk walked her through mapping all holdings and commitments into a single overview. The writing exercise between sessions helped her to estimate actual monthly surplus more accurately than she had before.

At the close

She left with a one-page financial summary she had compiled herself, a clearer sense of what her EPF balance implied for retirement timing, and a list of three specific actions — including an insurance review she had postponed for four years.

"The writing exercise sounded unnecessary when I first read about it. It wasn't."

First-time investor at 51, unsure where to begin

Investing Foundations · 8 weeks

The situation

A 51-year-old business owner with savings in fixed deposits only. He had always intended to invest but had not known how to assess the options without relying on a financial advisor who would also be selling him something.

What the programme did

The Foundations course walked through SC Malaysia-registered unit trusts and ETFs available locally, covering how to read cost disclosures and what questions to ask before buying. The self-employed EPF voluntary contribution framework was also addressed.

At the close

He left with a working understanding of three locally available low-cost funds he was prepared to evaluate further, and had started EPF voluntary contributions for the first time. He described himself as ready to make decisions without needing someone else to tell him what to do.

"I can now read a fund fact sheet without getting lost in the first paragraph."

Planning a retirement with a cross-border dimension

Whole-Picture Engagement · 6 months

The situation

A 54-year-old professional who had worked in Singapore for twelve years before returning to Johor Bahru. She held CPF savings (accessible at 55), Malaysian EPF, a Johor property, and investment holdings in SGD — and no clear retirement plan coordinating all of these.

What the programme did

Over six months, the Whole-Picture programme worked through EPF and CPF withdrawal sequencing, healthcare cost modelling, insurance gap identification, and the family commitments she was carrying — including a parent in assisted living and a child midway through university.

At the close

She left with a written summary document and a withdrawal sequence plan covering the decade from 55 to 65. She had identified a critical illness coverage gap she acted on before the programme ended, and had a healthcare cost estimate she could update as circumstances changed.

"The written summary at the end is something I've already referred back to twice."
